Syzygium myrtifolium (Kelat Oil, 長紅木)

Kelat Oil is in the family Myrtaceae and is native to Malaysia. It is an evergreen tree with a height of 4 to 5 meters or more. The new leaves of Kelat Oil are red. Plants with red new leaves are not uncommon. The special feature of Kelat Oil is that it can sprout several times a year. When the new leaves are full, the top of the crown shows a beautiful red, and the red new leaves gradually become orange-red, and finally green. Different crown colors can be seen in different periods. In addition, it is resistant to pruning and after pruning, new buds germinate, and it can also show a beautiful red. Kelat Oil gives the impression that it is almost all year round red. Because it's leaves are more beautiful than flowers, it is usually classified as a foliage plant. It has become a common horticultural landscape plant all over the world, and is often planted in gardens, parks, campuses, botanical gardens, etc or as a street tree. It is also often used as a shrub as a hedge or planted on an island in the center of the main road. Red represents joy in Taiwan. Many community buildings also like to plant some Kelat Oil around the building. In addition to adding beauty, it also symbolizes the fortune "often red".

Kelat Oil is strong and easy to plant. It likes high temperature and humidity and full sunlight, and is slightly drought-tolerant and shade-tolerant. It is pruning-resistant. Cuttings or high-pressure methods can be used for propagation, and spring and autumn are suitable periods.
